Why It’s important to reserve your rental directly from the owner.
In 2017, Expedia purchased the VRBO HomeAway family of websites where property owners would post their vacation rentals and travelers would be able to search, connect and reserve. There was only the fee for the property owner to list on the site. Totally legit.
It all just changed. Expedia is now hiding all contact information from owners and travelers. Charging travelers and owners fees on every reservation booked through their system, up to $500 just to click a button.
The system also blocks off reservations requests from the calendar before they are booked, and there is no way to contact the owner or renter until it is accepted only. Plus, a plethora of other headaches.
VRBO/HomeAway/Airbnb’s protection is not what you think it is, after much research we haven’t found any rhyme or reason as to why or how their refund policies work, and they often don’t pay the property owner.
We encourage all renters to go beyond a basic Google search and be very specific when you are exploring, and look on Facebook and other social media sites for the areas you are interested in.
Just search #BookDirect and there are tons of owners using the hashtag to be found.
Property owners usually have websites, Facebook and other social media pages.
